Les verbes majeurs
nous obsèdent au milieu
d’un été sans mouvement :

naître, grandir, aimer,
penser, croire, mourir,

et tandis qu’un enfant
gratte le sol où gisent
les urnes enfouies,
nous cherchons une phrase
qui fixera un but
à l’équipée du lendemain,

-- à moins de vivre à l’infinitif
comme un grand vent
qui ne sait d’où il vient,
vide de tout feuillage,

ou comme un moine bouddhiste
qui a enfoui au fond de lui-même
la destination du verbe aller.

The major verbs
beset us in the midst
of a static summer:

to be born, to grow, to love,
to think, to believe, to die,

and while a child
scrapes at the earth
where urns lie buried,
we seek a phrase
that will fix a goal
for tomorrow’s setting out,

− unless we live in the infinitive
like a great wind
out of nowhere,
bearing no leaves,

or like a Buddhist monk
who has thrust back deep in himself
the rationale for the verb to go
